Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London today at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness. He was 82.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a national statement, confirmed the passing of his predecessor and offered condolences to the Buhari family. He revealed that he had spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady, to convey the nation’s deepest sympathies.
As a mark of honour, President Tinubu has ordered all national flags to fly at half-staff. He has also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s body back home for burial.
Former President Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, after previously holding power as military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from across the country and around the world. Political leaders, diplomats, civil society groups, and ordinary Nigerians are sharing condolences and reflecting on his impact on Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” a family statement read, invoking the Islamic expression of mourning. “May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
