Uganda’s long-serving leader, President Yoweri Museveni, has once again emerged victorious in the country’s presidential election, extending his rule beyond four decades. The results, announced by the Electoral Commission following the January 15, 2026, poll, have been swiftly challenged by opposition leader Bobi Wine, who has called the outcome “fake results” and urged his supporters to engage in peaceful protest.

According to official figures, President Museveni, now 81, claimed approximately 72% of the vote, while his main challenger, 43-year-old Robert Kyagulanyi (popularly known as Bobi Wine), received around 25%. While Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters celebrated another landslide, Wine and his National Unity Platform (NUP) denounced the election as marred by widespread irregularities.

The entire process unfolded under the shadow of a nationwide internet blackout, sporadic voting delays, and forceful crackdowns on opposition voices by security forces. Allegations of large-scale ballot stuffing and intimidation were repeatedly raised by the opposition and independent observers, raising questions about transparency and fairness.

Historical and Political Context

Museveni’s win marks his seventh consecutive term in office. During his tenure, the ruling NRM has twice amended Uganda’s constitution—removing both presidential age and term limits—thus enabling his continued leadership. Uganda, since gaining independence in 1962, has yet to experience a peaceful transfer of presidential power, adding new weight to this election’s outcome.

Bobi Wine, a former pop star turned politician, has become the face of a new generation of Ugandans demanding change. Despite the official results, his campaign’s resilience and the outpouring of support on the streets and online highlight a shifting political landscape.
