The National Universities Commission (NUC) has taken a landmark step to accelerate ICT innovation in Nigerian universities by establishing a high-level committee dedicated to this mission. Announced in late February 2026, the committee is chaired by Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, and includes leading experts from various STEM fields: Emenugha Acho (Physics), Bashir Aliyu (Agricultural Engineering), Adamu Alkali (Mathematics), Edu Mba (Analytical/Industrial Chemistry), and Stella Nwosu (Educational Technology & Structural Design).
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Professor Ogundipe described the assignment as pivotal to reshaping the future of Nigerian universities, pledging collaboration to deliver an impactful and sustainable blueprint.
The committee’s primary goal is to develop a comprehensive ICT and STEM framework that will enhance research, innovation, and education in Nigeria’s higher institutions with the sole aim of modernizing academic curricula, fostering collaboration between universities and industry, and positioning Nigerian universities as hubs of technological advancement in Africa.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision to harness technology as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development. By championing ICT innovation, the NUC is ensuring that Nigerian students and researchers remain competitive globally, equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital economy.
