New York City, April 11, 2026 — A violent stabbing attack unfolded on Saturday morning at the 42nd Street-Grand Central subway station, leaving three elderly commuters injured and ending with police fatally shooting the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., Griffin launched a sudden and brutal attack on unsuspecting commuters wielding what witnesses and officials described as a machete. The assault began on the 7-train platform, where Griffin slashed one victim before moving to the lower level serving the 4, 5, and 6 trains, where he attacked two more individuals.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded swiftly to emergency calls reporting the violent incident. Upon arrival, officers encountered Griffin behaving erratically, reportedly claiming repeatedly that he was “Lucifer.” Despite officers ordering him to drop his weapon more than 20 times, Griffin advanced toward them with the blade extended.

In response to the imminent threat, an NYPD officer discharged his firearm twice, striking Griffin. The suspect was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the sequence of events and emphasized the officers’ efforts to de-escalate the situation before resorting to lethal force. The three victims, all elderly, were rushed to nearby hospitals with injuries that are currently being treated; their conditions have not been fully disclosed.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, raising concerns about subway safety and mental health issues. Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind Griffin’s attack and are reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements.
