Minister Justifies 50% Telecom Tariff Hike
The Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has defended the recent 50 percent hike in telecom tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), citing inflation and rising operational costs.
The minister explained that the decision aligns with broader economic trends while speaking at the 2025 budget defense session with the National Assembly’s Joint Committees on Communication.
Dr. Tijani noted that the tariff increase reflects additional costs on imported goods and acts as a form of sales tax, causing a one-time price adjustment rather than prolonged inflation. The move has sparked mixed reactions as Nigerians grapple with the broader impact on household expenses.
