NAFDAC DESTROYS N4.7Bn WORTH OF FAKE DRUGS IN RIVERS STATE

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully destroyed counterfeit and expired drugs, unwholesome processed food, and substandard products valued at N4.7 billion. The destruction took place at a dumpsite in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, under the supervision of NAFDAC Director-General, Christianah Adeyeye.
In her address, Adeyeye emphasized that this operation is a testament to NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health against the dangers posed by counterfeit medicines and substandard products. She highlighted the potential risks associated with these harmful items, including treatment failures and loss of lives.
The destroyed items included substandard medical products, unsafe cosmetics, and expired food products seized from various manufacturers and distributors. Additionally, compliant companies and NGOs voluntarily handed over damaged and expired products for destruction.
Adeyeye revealed that recent intelligence operations led to the discovery of warehouses in Port Harcourt, where unregistered alcoholic beverages and cosmetics were being reintroduced into circulation. The agency also received two 40-ft containers of unregistered drugs from the Nigeria Customs Service in Edo State, which were included in the destruction.
Prince Obi Ohia, acting Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency, commended NAFDAC for its efforts, stating that such actions will significantly reduce health risks and improve the well-being of citizens.
