TikTok Expands Digital Safety Initiative In Nigeria, Partners NITDA, DSN
The initiative, which began in 2022, aims to enhance digital safety across Nigeria by educating parents, teachers, and guardians on how to help young people navigate TikTok and the broader digital landscape safely.
TikTok has unveiled the second phase of its #SaferTogether digital safety and awareness initiative, in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Data Science Nigeria (DSN).
Launched in 2022, the initiative aims to improve digital safety across Nigeria by educating parents, teachers, and guardians on how to help young people navigate TikTok and the broader online environment securely.
The first phase of the #SaferTogether campaign successfully trained 537 teachers and 1,037 parents in cities such as Abuja, Lagos, and Kano, focusing on TikTok’s safety features and promoting positive online mental health. Building on this success, the second phase will now include NITDA as a key partner, in line with its mission to promote digital literacy and strengthen technology infrastructure.
Phase 2 will expand the program to additional regions, including Edo and Kaduna, and will address important topics such as misinformation, cyberbullying, sexting, digital citizenship, fake news, child sexual abuse, and data protection. Workshops will involve a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, government officials, community leaders, parents, teachers, and guardians.
Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok’s Director of Government Relations and Public Policy for Africa, emphasized the significance of digital literacy: “Equipping parents, teachers, and guardians with digital literacy skills is essential for creating a safer online environment. Our commitment to community safety remains strong, and through local partnerships, we are extending these educational resources beyond our platform.”
Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, Founder and CEO of Data Science Nigeria, stressed the shared responsibility in ensuring a safer digital world: “We are thrilled to continue our involvement in the Safer Together campaign, offering valuable insights on digital well-being to parents, teachers, and guardians.”
