Africa’s intellectual and high research interest continues to unfold across lecture halls,
conferences, laboratories, and innovation hubs on the continent. From ancient centers of
learning to innovative tech labs, African universities are reimagining knowledge
production and translating research into real-world impact. However, the continent’s innovation ecosystem continues to face deep-rooted challenges, from inadequate research funding and infrastructure to weak links between academia and industry. Although the continent has seen a steady rise in the number of universities and graduates, many institutions still struggle to turn research ideas into viable, market-ready
solutions. According to, Nwaka S. (2021), Social and Technological Innovation in Africa: Sustaining
a Post-COVID-19 Research for Development, Africa’s low innovation output is best illustrated by the relatively small number of scientific publications and patents emerging from within the continent. Even where innovations occur, they are often supported and funded by external partners, a pattern that underscores the continent’s dependency on external aid for innovation growth.Experts have long argued that higher institutions must evolve beyond teaching and traditional research to become engines of innovation. American scholar, Henry Etzkowitz, popularized this idea in the 1980s, noting that collaboration between universities, industry, and government is essential for driving progress in a knowledge-based society. Similarly, the late Kenyan academic Calestus Juma emphasized that Africa must build “innovation
universities” if it hopes to achieve economic transformation and inclusive growth. These deals align strongly with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 “The Africa We Want ”, which calls for knowledge-driven development across the continent. Yet, progress has been slow, with limited internal funding and collaborations, and many research and innovation efforts still dependent on foreign aid and external partnerships. In response to these challenges, IDEA TV’s “IDEA Universities of Interest” (IUI) aims to
highlight and celebrate African universities making an impact in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Africa, often against all odds.
