The “super flu” spreading across the U.S. and Europe is a new, highly contagious variant of influenza A (H3N2) known as “subclade K”. It has caused a severe, early, and rapid rise in cases during the 2024–25 season, often resulting in higher fever, severe body aches, and longer recovery times.
Key Details About the Subclade K Variant:
Treatment & Prevention: While the vaccine’s effectiveness may be reduced, it still offers protection against severe illness. Antiviral drugs are effective if taken early.
Why It’s Spreading: This variant has mutations in its surface protein (hemagglutinin) that allow it to partially evade immunity from prior infections or vaccines.
Impact: It has become the dominant strain, driving the most severe flu season since 2017-18 in the U.S. and the earliest, most significant surge in the UK since 2003-04.
Symptoms: Typical symptoms are more intense than regular flu, including high fever, severe cough, and extreme fatigue.
Common Symptoms
- High fever
- Severe muscle and body aches
- Intense cough
- Significant fatigue and long recovery time
This strain has caused a high number of hospitalizations, particularly among vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children.
