Pope Leo XIV brought his historic first day in Uruguay to a close by presiding over solemn evening prayers (Vespers) at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Montevideo. The service marked the conclusion of an intense opening leg of his 12-day apostolic journey across South America—his first international tour since undergoing lung surgery last month.

Earlier in the day, the Pope touched down at Montevideo-Carrasco International Airport, where he was welcomed by government officials and enthusiastic crowds. In his opening remarks and addresses to local authorities, the Holy Father emphasized the dignity of the human person and strongly advocated for universal healthcare, calling it a fundamental right that should reach every member of society.

During the evening liturgy at the cathedral, Pope Leo addressed local bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and seminarians. He reflected on the trials of ministry and the strength found in spiritual endurance, encouraging the clergy to lean into daily closeness with Jesus Christ. He also paid tribute to the rich history of the local Church, noting the resting place of Blessed Jacinto Vera beneath the cathedral’s vaults.

True to form, the pontiff ended his evening with an impromptu moment of connection. Surprising the faithful gathered outside the Apostolic Nunciature where he is staying, Pope Leo stepped out onto the balcony to greet cheering young crowds.

“Where are the young people? Where are the Pope’s young people?” he called out playfully, thanking them for their warm welcome in one of Latin America’s most secular nations.

The Pope’s schedule continues with further pastoral engagements in Uruguay before he travels onward to Argentina and Peru to complete his 12-day regional itinerary.
