Police are continuing to search for a suspect as an active shooter situation unfolds on the university’s campus, according to an emergency alert issued by Brown University. An earlier alert had indicated that a suspect was in custody, but that information was later revised.

Students have been instructed to shelter in place until further notice, with guidance to lock doors, stay hidden, and silence mobile phones. Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people, if any, have been injured.

Both the Brown University Police Department and the Providence Police Department are responding to the incident near an engineering building on the east side of the campus, the alert said.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over gun violence in schools. According to analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week, and Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 70 school shootings have been recorded in the United States so far this year.
