The South African government has expelled the Israeli embassy following a series of actions deemed as unacceptable violations of diplomatic norms, according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
Key Reasons for Expulsion DIRCO cited multiple breaches that led to this unprecedented move:
- Insulting Social Media Attacks: The Israeli embassy repeatedly used its official social media channels to launch what DIRCO described as “insulting attacks” against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
- Unauthorized Official Visits: The embassy deliberately failed to notify the South African government about visits by senior Israeli officials, which DIRCO regarded as a direct affront to South Africa’s sovereignty.
- Protocol Breaches: Earlier this month, an Israeli delegation visited the Eastern Cape to discuss water and healthcare assistance without adhering to established diplomatic protocols.
The South African government characterized these actions as a gross abuse of diplomatic privilege and a fundamental breach of the Vienna Convention, which governs international diplomatic relations.
Escalating Tensions This expulsion marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Strains in the relationship intensified after South Africa filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in 2023. The latest actions by the Israeli embassy, according to DIRCO, further undermined trust and diplomatic cooperation.
As the situation develops, both governments and the international community will be closely watching for further responses and potential impacts on bilateral relations.
