On Wednesday, December 31, 2025, Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) officially approved the Toumai Pro Robotic Surgical System for clinical use.

This landmark regulatory clearance makes Nigeria the first country in West Africa to approve and deploy robotic surgery for human clinical applications.

Key Details of the Milestone

Nigeria has marked a major milestone in healthcare innovation with the launch of the Toumai® Pro, a state-of-the-art robotic-assisted surgical platform known as the “Hope of Life.” This advanced system is designed for precision, minimally invasive surgeries in fields including urology, gynecology, surgical oncology, bariatrics, and general surgery.

The introduction of the Toumai® Pro follows a strategic partnership between the Nisa Medical Group and RoboMed Global, a U.S.-based medical technology leader spearheaded by experts from the Nigerian diaspora. The first installation of the platform was officially commissioned and unveiled at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, setting a new benchmark for surgical care in the country.

One of the standout features of the Toumai® Pro system is its ability to deliver greater surgical precision, resulting in smaller incisions, less pain, and significantly faster recovery times for patients compared to traditional surgical methods. These improvements are expected to drive better patient outcomes and enhance the overall quality of healthcare services in Nigeria.

To sustain and expand this technological leap, RoboMed has announced plans to establish the RoboMed Academy in Nigeria. The academy will provide world-class training and certification for local surgeons and biomedical engineers, ensuring that Nigeria builds a robust talent pool capable of leveraging cutting-edge robotic medical technologies.

The initiative, dubbed “Nigeria Robotics,” is set to serve not only Nigeria but the entire West African region. Surgeons from neighboring countries such as Togo, Sierra Leone, and Chad have already begun specialized training, signaling the platform’s regional impact.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, hailed the launch as a “giant leap” for Nigeria’s healthcare system. By making world-class robotic surgery available locally, the government aims to significantly reduce the number of Nigerians who travel abroad for surgical care.

Looking ahead, a public launch event and further expansion plans for the Nigeria Robotics initiative are scheduled for January 2026 in Abuja. This ambitious project represents a new era for healthcare delivery in Nigeria and West Africa, bringing hope and advanced care closer to home
