On Sunday, January 4, 2026, President Bola Tinubu issued a decisive directive for an immediate manhunt following a deadly terrorist raid on Kasuwan Daji village market in Niger State.

The President’s order was sent to the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa; Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Service Chiefs; Inspector-General of Police; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS). Security forces have been tasked to quickly track down and apprehend the perpetrators, as well as to rescue all abducted individuals.

“These terrorists have tested the resolve of Nigeria and must face the full consequences of their actions,” President Tinubu declared in his official statement.

President Tinubu also directed that intelligence-driven operations be intensified, particularly around vulnerable rural communities near forested hideouts. “We will not rest until every Nigerian is safe and secure. The nation stands united against those who threaten our peace,” he added.

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Kasuwan Daji, Borgu Local Government Area. Reports indicate that between 30 to 50 people were killed when gunmen on motorcycles attacked the market, fired indiscriminately, looted shops, and set the area on fire.

Defence Minister Christopher Musa condemned the assault, stating: “Our security agencies are fully mobilized and committed to bringing every perpetrator to justice. We urge citizens to cooperate with authorities and remain vigilant.”

Authorities believe the attackers are terrorists who fled into Niger State from Sokoto and Zamfara after a U.S. airstrike on Christmas Eve 2025.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, reassured the public: “We are intensifying patrols and intelligence operations in all affected areas. Our priority is the safety of lives and property.”
