PayPal—one of the world’s leading digital payment platforms—announced a landmark partnership with Nigerian fintech giant Paga.
This historic collaboration ends more than two decades of restrictions that prevented Nigerians from receiving international payments via PayPal, ushering in a new era for digital commerce and financial inclusion in Africa’s largest economy.
Breaking Down Barriers
For years, Nigerian entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses could make payments using PayPal but were blocked from receiving funds from clients and partners abroad.
“It’s been a major headache for small businesses and creatives in Nigeria,” says Chidinma Okoro, a Lagos-based designer. “We’ve missed out on countless global opportunities simply because we couldn’t get paid easily.”
With the new PayPal-Paga partnership, this challenge is a thing of the past. Millions of Nigerians can now receive payments from anywhere in the world directly into their Paga wallets, with funds seamlessly converted to naira and integrated into local banks.
“This is a game-changer,” says Tayo Oviosu, CEO of Paga. “It means Nigerian businesses can now compete globally, freelancers can access new clients, and families can receive remittances quickly and securely.”
Economic Impact and Opportunities
The partnership is expected to:
Boost E-commerce: Nigerian online merchants and startups can now reach global customers, driving business growth and increasing revenue.
Empower Freelancers: Remote workers—writers, designers, developers, and more—can easily receive international payments for their services. “I can finally accept global clients without worrying about payment barriers,” said freelance graphic designer Amaka Onu.
Streamline Remittances: Families can receive remittances from abroad more easily and securely, strengthening financial ties and supporting local economies.
