In a bold step towards sustainable energy solutions, the Federal Government has rolled out a N100 billion National Public Sector Solarization Initiative (NPSSI), aiming to provide reliable electricity to public institutions nationwide.
The announcement was made by Engr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), during a meeting with Justice Babatunde Adejumo, Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), at the agency’s Abuja headquarters.
According to Engr. Aliyu, the NPSSI is designed to address persistent electricity challenges faced by government establishments, particularly those grappling with insufficient power supply or high energy costs. “President Bola Tinubu approved N100 billion for the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative, and this is where institutions like the National Judicial Institute can benefit,” he stated.
Implementation of the initiative is already underway in several key public sector facilities, including the Department of State Services, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, National Hospital Abuja, and numerous educational institutions across the country.
Highlighting the agency’s commitment, Engr. Aliyu revealed that REA would soon conduct an energy audit at the NJI to determine the optimal solar mini-grid system for the institute. “Once the energy audit is completed, we will determine the size of the mini-grid and the distribution network that will be deployed,” he explained.
The intervention targets public institutions that are either underserved or facing challenges in paying for conventional electricity supply, with the ultimate goal of expanding renewable energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on the national grid.
Justice Adejumo, in his remarks, emphasized the critical importance of stable electricity for the effective operation of judicial institutions. He pointed out that modern judicial training and research depend on reliable power supply, welcoming the government’s innovative approach to resolving these challenges.
