The current FIFA World Cup trophy, introduced in 1974, stands as one of the most iconic and coveted prizes in global sports. While the trophy’s production cost is estimated between $242,700 and $250,000—primarily due to its solid 18-karat gold construction—its true value is considered priceless. Market valuations for the original, one-of-a-kind trophy often reach as high as $20 million.

Production Cost and Materials

The trophy is crafted from over 6 kilograms (13 pounds) of 18-karat (75%) gold and features two layers of malachite on its base. When first designed by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga in 1971, the trophy cost around $50,000 to produce. Today, with inflation and the soaring price of gold, manufacturing a new one would cost closer to $250,000. As of mid-2025, the value of the gold alone is estimated to be between $161,000 and $407,725, depending on market fluctuations.

Craftsmanship: Each trophy is hand-crafted in Paderno Dugnano, Italy, by Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni, adding to its uniqueness and value.

Actual Value vs. Production Cost

Despite a production cost under a quarter-million dollars, the World Cup trophy’s fame and historical significance make it virtually priceless. Its estimated market value is around $20 million, reflecting its status as an irreplaceable symbol of football history.

Winning teams do not take home the original trophy. Instead, they receive a bronze, gold-plated replica, which is far less expensive to produce—costing about $3,565 each.
Ownership and Legacy

The original trophy remains in FIFA’s possession at all times. Unlike the Jules Rimet trophy, which could be won permanently, the current World Cup trophy is never awarded outright to any team, reinforcing its singular status in the world of sports.
