Africa’s intellectual and research interest continues to unfold across lecture halls, conferences, laboratories,
and innovation hubs. From ancient and modern centers of learning to technology labs, African universities are reimagining knowledge production and translation of research into real-world impact. Although the continent has witnessed a steady rise in the number of universities and graduates in recent years, many of these institutions struggle to turn research ideas into viable, market ready solutions. The continent’s innovation ecosystem continues to face deep-rooted challenges, from inadequate research and infrastructural funding to weak links between academia and industry, and poor translational research capacity.

According to Nwaka, experts have long argued that higher institutions must evolve beyond teaching and traditional research to become engines of innovation. American scholar, Henry Etzkowitz, popularized this idea in the 1980s, noting that collaboration between universities, industry, and government is essential for driving progress in a knowledge-based society. Similarly, the late Kenyan academic Calestus Juma emphasized that Africa must build “innovation universities” if it hopes to achieve economic transformation and inclusive growth. These deals align strongly with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 “The Africa We Want ”, which calls for knowledge-driven development across the continent. Yet, progress has been slow, with limited internal funding and collaborations, and many research and innovation efforts still dependent on foreign aid and external partnerships.

IDEA TV, the innovative television in Africa, is more than a channel. We shine a spotlight on ideas, breakthroughs, and systems shaping and inspiring knowledge-based development in Africa through research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
IDEA Universities of Interest (IUI) celebrates African-based Universities that are positively impacting Africa’s research, innovation, and entrepreneurship landscape, from health to agriculture to education to environmental outcomes and impact. Through this recognition, we seek to create awareness and awaken
African Universities, policymakers, and the general public on the need to support universities, not only to achieve these goals but to also hold them accountable for doing so. This second edition features the innovative Pan African University (PAU) of the African Union that exemplifies Africa’s progress towards knowledge driven development. It also highlights the Universities in various African regions that host the various PAU Institutes. Beyond hosting PAU institutes, These universities are engines of African innovation in their own right and deserve to be profiled as IUI. They are: University of Ibadan Nigeria, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Kenya, University of Tlemcen Algeria, and University of Yaounde II and University of Buea Cameroon.
