Celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, who passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The incident has ignited a national conversation about medical negligence and the state of healthcare in Nigeria, as resident doctors across the country prepare for a strike that could further strain an already challenged system.

According to initial reports, Nkanu died after a brief illness while the family was visiting Lagos over the Christmas holidays. However, in statements released by Adichie around January 10-11, she alleged that medical negligence at a private hospital played a direct role in her son’s death.

“He was our light and joy, taken from us by a system that failed him,” Adichie wrote in a heartfelt statement. “No parent should have to endure this kind of pain, especially when it could have been prevented.”

Adichie detailed a sequence of events in which Nkanu was admitted to Atlantis Hospital and later referred to Euracare Multispecialist Hospital for diagnostic tests. She contends that her son was administered too much propofol by an anesthesiologist and was not properly monitored during sedation, which resulted in cardiac arrest and seizures.

“They gave him too much, and they didn’t watch him. My son deserved better,” Adichie said.

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has expressed its deepest sympathy to the family but firmly denied allegations of negligence, stating that an internal investigation is ongoing.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time. The loss of a child is beyond words, and we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his parents and the entire family. we find it necessary, for the record , to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contains inaccuracies. Our facility is a reputable centre for complex medical care, led by an internationally trained and experience clinical team. The Patient, who was critically ill, was refered to our facility for specific diagnostic procedure”. We have commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices. We remain committed to engaging transparenty and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes.

The tragedy comes at a time when Nigeria’s healthcare system is facing immense pressure. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a nationwide strike starting tomorrow, citing unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and chronic underfunding. This industrial action is expected to bring many public hospitals to a near-standstill, putting countless patients at risk and underscoring the urgent need for systemic reform.

Healthcare experts warn that the combination of inadequate facilities, frequent strikes, and the lack of accountability for medical errors contributes to thousands of preventable deaths each year. “We are in a state of emergency,” said Dr. Amina Yusuf, a public health advocate. “Cases like that of Nkanu Nnamdi are tragic but, sadly, not isolated.”

The death of Nkanu Nnamdi has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from civil society and government officials alike. President Bola Tinubu released an official statement extending condolences to the Adichie-Esege family and pledging to “ensure a thorough investigation and necessary reforms.”

“With a deep sense of grief, I condole with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and the entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
As a parent myself who has suffered the loss of a loved one, no grief is as devastating as losing a child. I empathise with the family at this difficult time, and I mourn this sad loss with them. Ms Adichie is a literary icon who has brought joy and light to many homes globally, and I pray she and her family find strength in the Almighty in this trying hour. My prayers are with the family.

As the family requests privacy in this period of immense grief, the nation is left to reckon with the urgent challenges facing its healthcare system—a crisis made more acute by the looming strike of resident doctors. The hope is that Nkanu’s story will galvanize action, so that no other family endures a similar tragedy.
