Business & World News Desk

Global financial markets erupted with optimism on Wednesday as reports of a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran sent stock indexes soaring and oil prices tumbling — offering the world a glimpse of economic relief after months of war-driven uncertainty.

Oil prices fell sharply, with Brent crude — the international benchmark — dropping 7.8% to close at $101.27 per barrel, down from over $115 earlier in the week. The dramatic decline came after President Donald Trump signaled that the Strait of Hormuz could be “OPEN TO ALL” if Iran accepts a reported peace agreement.

What Is the Strait of Hormuz and Why Does It Matter?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets. The ongoing war with Iran has blocked oil tankers from using it, and a reopening could allow oil to flow freely again — removing the upward pressure on inflation that has been driving up the cost of goods worldwide.

Markets Respond With Strong Gains

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 climbed 1.5% for its best single-day performance in nearly a month, hitting a fresh all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 612 points to 49,910, while the Nasdaq composite gained 512 points to close at 25,838.

The rally was further fueled by a strong corporate earnings season. AMD surged 18.6% after the chipmaker exceeded both profit and revenue expectations. CEO Lisa Su credited continued growth in artificial intelligence technology as a key driver, noting surging demand for computing power from data centers worldwide.

Other major companies also posted impressive gains. CVS Health climbed 7.6%, Disney rose 7.5% on the back of strong streaming and parks performance, and Uber jumped 8.5% after issuing a bullish spring bookings forecast

Airlines and travel companies — particularly sensitive to fuel costs — also benefitted. United Airlines gained 6.8%, while Carnival and Royal Caribbean each rose 6.8% and 8.8% respectively, on hopes that declining oil prices would ease their operating costs.

Diplomatic Signals From All Sides

Reports indicated that US and Iranian officials were working on a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war and establish a framework for further nuclear negotiations.

China’s foreign minister also called for a comprehensive ceasefire after meeting with Iran’s counterpart — a potentially significant development given how deeply tied Iran is to China economically and politically.

However, caution remains. Trump warned that if Iran does not agree to his terms, “the bombing starts, and it will be at a much higher level and intensity than before.” He also told the New York Post it was “too soon” to prepare to sign any peace deal.

Bond Markets and Interest Rates React

Treasury yields eased notably, with the 10-year yield falling to 4.35% from 4.43% — a meaningful move that could translate into lower mortgage and loan rates for consumers and businesses alike

Global Markets Also Rise

European markets joined the rally, with the broad Stoxx 600 index closing up 2.3%. South Korea’s Kospi surged past the 7,000 mark for the first time ever, driven largely by AI-linked gains in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
